after my work out
\ni pick up my car at 2pm today
\na new tire and an oil change
\nand to indulge myself i’ll
\ndrive to harris teeter and
\nuse a harris teeter coupon i
\nhave for a huge savings on a
\npint of Ben and Jerry’s
\nice cream<\/p>\n
on the way back to my car
\nparked near duck donuts
\ni’ll stop in duck donuts
\nand buy two of their
\nincomparably delicious
\nplain doughnuts baked
\nwhile i wait<\/p>\n
ice cream and donuts
\na treat for an old man
\nwho doesn’t give a damn
\nabout what some would
\nconsider unhealthy food<\/p>\n
and maybe occasionally
\neating ice cream and
\ndonuts are my only vices
\nand good for my soul<\/p>\n
there are far worse things
\ni could be doing
\nlike wasting the rest of
\nmy waning years
\nwhether a few or twenty
\nmindlessly watching
\nmeaningless tv shows all day
\non a mind numbing tv screen<\/p>\n
or drinking myself to death
\nin some musty old bar
\nbabbling about nonsensical things
\nwith other drunken old men
\nbarely able to think or speak
\nnearly incapacitated from
\nloneliness and too much alcohol<\/p>\n
or being driven crazy
\nliving with the wrong woman
\nwho seemed like the right
\nwoman when we first met when
\nshe was on her best behavior<\/p>\n
sometimes being alone is better
\nthan being with someone with whom
\nyou are miserable and lonely with<\/p>\n
i end this rambling poem thinking
\nabout the ice cream and the donuts
\nthe way i once thought of meeting
\na woman for a date<\/p>\n
admittedly a poor comparison
\nto the wonders and charms
\nof a woman<\/p>\n
but it works for me<\/p>\n
