On a dreadful summer night
\nshe got drunk with two disreputable men,
\nsupposed to be her friends.<\/p>\n
They took advantage of her in the
\nback seat of a car when she was barely
\nconscience, too drunk to resist.<\/p>\n
Like unfeeling, heartless monsters,
\nthey boasted of their rape conquest
\nto others in the city where I lived.<\/p>\n
She never told the police, perhaps she
\ndidn\u2019t want to endure what was shameful to her.<\/p>\n
Her reputation sullied, many were told.<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t want to hear about it, her being
\ntaken advantage of like that, her being drunk.<\/p>\n
But unlike others, her reputation wasn\u2019t sullied
\nwith me.<\/p>\n
She was still a genuinely sweet woman
