how does that calculate?

so many questions
so many answers
everybody is right
nobody is wrong
how does that
calculate?

so many wars
so many dead
each side feels
it’s right
how does that
calculate?

eggs are bad
for you
then eggs are
good for you
how does that
calculate?

i’ve decided not
to try to add
it all up.
i just live my
live and bide
my time
before i die.

Lonely Old Man

The old man lives a lonely life.
Sometimes he misses the company of a woman.
Sometimes he feels he’s better off without one
and he thinks about how he could die on her
or she could die on him at their old ages
or how she could be disappointing
or could leave him and break his heart.

He often wishes the need for female companionship
wasn’t encoded so deeply and lastingly in his DNA.
He thought at 80 years of age that need would be erased
but it persists like a never ending torment
to his deepening need and his ever aging lonely mind.

Changing Seasons

It’s December and the trees have lost most of their leaves.
The ground is covered with them like a blanket.
The man with the inquiring mind wonders if the leaves
or the trees or the ground are aware of what has happened.
He wonders if they are oblivious about the perennial event
or if it’s like a celebration of the changing seasons to them.

Brandon’s Dream

Brandon got shot down again,
four women so far this year.
He knows if he were rich
the tables would be turned.
But he works as a janitor
instead of as a CEO
and his options are far less
than if he were rich.
He plays the lottery every
week in hopes of becoming
more superficially attractive
to superficial gold digging
inwardly unattractive women.

chipmunks

chipmunks are rarely seen
but when you see them
it’s such a wonderful treat
the cutest little creatures
that anyone could ever see
i’d like to have one as a pet
but feel it would be unfair
to keep such a free and
cute creature confined
so i’ll just have to see
them when I can and
be content with that

Hard to Imagine

Hard to imagine that gargantuan beasts
known as dinosaurs populated the planet
millions of years ago.
Hard to imagine the earth has
existed that long ago.
Supposedly it has existed 4.5 billion years.
Hard to imagine how scientists know that.
Impossible to figure out
what this creation is all about.

Wrong Guy

She met him in a church
right after her divorce.
She needed a guy to
fill her lonely life.
He asked her out
and she accepted.
After that first date
she disappeared
and the guy she
met left town
to attend another
church service
in another town
to find another woman
to rape and murder.

Bob Boyd

twenty years of marriage

twenty years of marriage
and three kids
a perfect couple.
church goers,
family that prays together

all the markings of
a perfect marriage
upstanding citizens
husband a mayor
wife a professor

but the romance
died down in their
twenty year marriage
and they both
sought other partners

and joined the ranks
of all the broken
marriages and
many lost loves
and left each other

Souls Choosing the Lives They Are Born Into

I’ve read some people claim we choose the lives we are born into.
I find that claim hard to believe. I find it fictitious.
For example, who would choose to come into this life as an aborted baby
or a person born deaf and blind or with a terminal cancer?
I could see people or souls choosing to come into this life
with tons of advantages and with the silver spoons of wealth
or with illness-free charmed lives and with beautiful faces,
beautiful bodies and genius IQs.
But who would choose to come into this life as a child destined
to be sold or kidnapped into prostitution?
I know a bit about the soul choosing lives theory.
Supposedly we choose good or bad lives to better our spiritual growth,
but I just don’t believe we have that pre-birth option.
And if you choose to one up me and say I just don’t get it,
I respectfully think you don’t get it either. Realistically, how could
you or I really know what happens before we are born?
You’re “belief” could be right as could mine.
Whatever the truth is, I hope you and I have
better lives if we have to come back here again.

Agreeing to Disagree

She said we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
She said that so many times I wondered
if we ever were going to agree on anything.
The only thing she didn’t say that about
was when I said we were incompatible.
Then she said we can agree to agree.
After six months with her and her
agreeing to disagreeing I have come
to hate the words agree and disagree.
And if you think I’m being foolish,
we’ll have to agree to disagree.

Bob Boyd

joyous awakening

he wakes up
hearing
birds singing
merrily
the sun is up
and shining
like never
before
the flowers
are blossoming
more beautifully
than he ever
noticed
butterflies are
flitting playfully
above gorgeous
purple flowers
it’s one of
the greatest
days of
his life
because
yesterday
he was
healed of
cancer
