I heard a pounding
on the door in the
hallway outside
my apartment
a noisy interruption
to my Internet
reverie
After the pounding
ceased, I looked
outside my apartment
window facing the
street
And saw the soul hunters
an elderly man
who looked like a
minister and an elderly
woman
maybe his dutiful wife
I knew they had pounded
on the door to save what
they mistakenly thought
was my hellbound soul
to win another soul
for the Lord
I knew that they mistakenly
thought they were privy
to the only way
the key
to their heaven
that I’d been too
lost
too dumb
to comprehend
They wandered away
to save other lost
souls from the hell
they were headed for
especially if they were
of another religion
that guaranteed they’d
have a one way
ticket to hell
It was better I didn’t
answer the door
I’ve no time for
people who assume
they have the only
truth
the only way
that others
need to be persuaded
to follow
Hell’s bells
