Magic and Tricks

I can understand people being
Charmed by magic and its practices.
Who isn’t amazed seeing a magician
levitating in the air? Today common fare.
Rabbits out of hats, no longer in vogue.
Walking on water and such now the
Craze. Sometimes life seems
Made up of magic and tricks
When you find true love,
And it turns out to be like a trick
when true love disappears.

Oh How I Wonder About Being With You

Sometimes I think I’d love to be with you
Sometimes I think it would be like sticking
My hands into the flames of red hot fire
At the heartrending risk of getting burnt again
At other times I remember the wonders I see in you
Your inner beauty vastly beyond any outer beauty
Your captivating lightness of being, your joyfulness
And ponder if you’d be the love beyond loves
But wonder if because I’m a deep thinking man
Mystically spiritual and never ending philosophical
Ever questing new and fascinating knowledge
If our minds could ever meet in an Elysian Fields
Of ambrosial, mythical, epical immortal love
That would soar our hearts into the heavens
Oh how I wonder about being with you

If only You Believed

Was listening to Jefferson Starship Miracles. You know the part where they sing “If only you believed in miracles, so would I?” That’s my lyric to you. I’m here, heart open, bouquet of purple Irises, your favorite color, offering you all my love and more. If only you believed in miracles. If only you believed in the epic love of a lifetime, yours and mine, ever true, always new, only for you, ever glorious, me leaving never. The love poets write about, singers sing about, movies film about, people dream about. If only you believed… like I do.

This Is True Love

Home from the Vietnam War, two tours,
Wheelchair confined, broken body, traumatized mind.
High School sweetheart wife waited through the
Years, the tears, the fears. Cared For him,
Stayed with him, loved him through PTSD,
Times of depression and despair, hospital stays,
Many health problems, her love, her caring unwavering
Through it all till at age sixty- eight when he died,
Wife at his bedside. Could love be truer than that?

Real and Lasting True Love

Remember the song You Didn’t Have to Be so Nice by the Loving Spoonfuls?
That’s how I still feel about you.
You came into my life on a dark, downcast day.
The woman I thought was the love of my life left me, and I felt so down and gloomy.
Until you showed up.
Years later when an auto accident put me in a wheelchair for the rest of my life, half a man, felt like killing myself, thought my life was over, and I’d lose you.
Until you showed up.
And loved me even more, always there for me, taking care of me, never leaving me.
And I believe you’ll still be there for me In the afterlife.
When I’ll be a whole man again, and I’ll be there for you; and I’ll love you even more.

Heavenly Love

I often think of you when we’re apart
And how your love mended my broken heart.

I’ve never been with a woman like you
Without an equal, wonderful and true.

A remade complete man thanks to sweet you.
The day we met, like a miracle breakthrough.

I felt a heaven awaken in me
Thanks to you the angel who had the key

That unlocked my heart like never before
With a true love that will last evermore.

A Good Catch

Leslie had no time for Winston,
His flashy cars, his inheirited wealth, his bragging
His big balance credit cards, his designer clothes,
Meant nothing to her.

Nancy, a different breed,
A keen eye for self-enrichment,
Saw the benefits, the monied life,
Overlooked the negatives, worth the sacrifice.

Leslie married a male social worker,
Who aiding the poor, the disabled, the elderly,
More about Service to others than the money.
They didn’t have the rich trappngs;
They had the true love.

Nancy married Winston, a lavish wedding,
Landed the big fish, mined the gold,
Lived the abundant, material life,
Got everything she wanted …
Except true love.

Reunion

I remember her last resigned gasp
The awful rattling in her throat
The end of her, the end of everything
Without her, I wanted to die too.

For ten years I’ve had endless laments
Never ceasing in my love for her
Never loving another woman
True to her as if she never died.

Now with a deadly stage 4 cancer
My diseased life coming to an end
I hear a voice, see a pretty face
My Love smiling and waiting for me.
