Her Eye Rolls

I don’t know exactly why
but I love the way she rolls her eyes.
She rolls them when she’s annoyed.
She rolls them when she dances.
And all her eye rolls tickle ineffable
joy in me everytime she does them.
Her eye rolls are better than a pint
of the tastiest ice cream I’ve ever had
and more heart warning than a hearty meal.

soul hopper

when he died he was unfulfilled
he’d lived a dull uneventful life
somehow he figured out how
to live a more exciting life
instead of going to the Light
he secretly entered into the
body of an adventurous guy
and lived an exciting life
with him until the guy died
then he soul hopped into a
playboy’s body and had
relationships with women
that he’d never had
he kept up the soul hopping
until his soul eventually
got wasted up and he
evaporated out of life
into unawareness and
eternal nothingness

saw you in a dream last night

it’s been over a decade since you left me
because you had many health problems
and didn’t want to burden me
in spite of my wanting to stand by you
and help you through your struggles
eventually i got over you years ago
and hadn’t thought about you in
a long time and was surprised
to see you in a dream last night
i was more surprised when
you didn’t recognize me and
turned away when I told you
who i was and never
spoke even a word to me

bears in cartoons

bears in cartoons are always fun and harmless
and no humans are killing them

if only life could be like the cartoons
with bears always fun and harmless
and no humans killing them

imagine if life was kind of like a cartoon
with no one getting killed and
no unhappy endings

maybe when we die our lives are
kind of like a cartoon
maybe if reincarnation exists
we keep coming back to
this uncertain life
until we get enlightened
and make it to a happy
cartoon-like life
where bears are always fun
and harmless
and no humans
are killing them

True and Indestructible Happiness

Happiness is great as long as things are going well,
but in a fateful moment it can be destroyed
permanently or temporarily –
a broken heart, death of a loved one, a terminal disease.
It seems to me happiness can be fragile,
yet some people seem to resurrect it despite
all the fateful moments they endure.
Maybe there really is a place called heaven
where happiness isn’t fragile and
lasts forever and ever.
Maybe that would be where you would experience
true and indestructible happiness.

Lonely Old Man

The old man lives a lonely life.
Sometimes he misses the company of a woman.
Sometimes he feels he’s better off without one
and he thinks about how he could die on her
or she could die on him at their old ages
or how she could be disappointing
or could leave him and break his heart.

He often wishes the need for female companionship
wasn’t encoded so deeply and lastingly in his DNA.
He thought at 80 years of age that need would be erased
but it persists like a never ending torment
to his deepening need and his ever aging lonely mind.

Changing Seasons

It’s December and the trees have lost most of their leaves.
The ground is covered with them like a blanket.
The man with the inquiring mind wonders if the leaves
or the trees or the ground are aware of what has happened.
He wonders if they are oblivious about the perennial event
or if it’s like a celebration of the changing seasons to them.
