The Unshakable Calm

I remember meditating for many hours
daily at meditation retreats in
serene, isolated locations.
I remember feeling like I’d attained
the desired unshakable calm,
blissed out from all the hours of
going deeper and deeper in the
depths of my ever expanding mind
only to have my illusionary
unshakable calm shattered back
in the real world with its inherent
daily stresses and strains.

And Justice for All

Justice for all doesn’t necessarily
mean equal justice for all.
Often you get the justice you can afford.
Poor man with only a public defender.
Rich man with a team of the best lawyers
money can buy.
Poor man has barely a prayer.
Rich man more equally blessed.
Moreover liars often get lighter sentences,
sweet plea deals less time in prison.
Honest defendants screwed, no plea deals,
longer prison sentences.
Justice for all unequal justice for many.

From Enemies to Allies

Two countries went to war.
They bombed the hell out of each other.
Each country encouraged their young men
to slaughter the young men of the other country.
Millions died, many civilian casualties, even children.
Cemeteries filled to capacity, so many senselessly dead.
Tears fell like tsunamis on both sides.
Just people who wanted to live peaceful lives.
Saddled with heartaches for the rest of their lives.
Years later, the countries became allies, like friends.
If only they could have gotten to that place without
all the carnage and the millions dead.
