I Write These Poems for Myself

I don’t care about trying to publish
any of my poems in a magazine
I just post them here on my blog for myself
like a daily mental workout for my mind

I’ve no interest in a lot of attention
if thousands or even hundreds came here daily
I’d get a little uncomfortable

besides even if poets become the
greatest poets of their day
when enough time goes by
decades, hundreds, thousands of years or more
they are forgotten, as if they never wrote poems

I don’t care about any fleeting legacy
for any of the poems I write
and even if I had started writing poetry
at 16 instead of 76 and became well known
I’d probably be known for a poem or two
and forgotten not long after I died

and from what I’ve seen, even famous poets
are often known only for a few of their hundreds
or thousands of poems they write
so I’m happily obscure and unknown.

She Said Use Your Fucking Head

Once I was married to a woman who said
use your fucking head to me
of course, I erupted at that and
said something back to her
like you don’t talk to me like that
or maybe I traded an expletive with her
but I don’t think so
and it was too long ago to remember
my exact enraged words
but I do rememberr, and what
she didn’t know was
the day she talked to me like that
the death bells began to knell
and though she didn’t know it
I was done with her on that day
in my heart I had left her
because I don’t suffer disrespect
nor would I talk to a woman like that
especially one I was supposed to love.

I Like Witches

I like witches
white witches
witches who do no harm
who learn about herbs
who learn about spells
I like how they are
so invested in the natural world
I like how they often have
a unique fashion sense
I like how they’re not afraid
of being a little different
of having a different world view
I wonder if that describes you.
