I met a lovely woman in a dream last night
being with her was feeling good and right
but before things developed into a romance
I woke up and knew I’d never see her again

Simon’s mother always said to him
don’t count your chickens before they hatch
but since he didn’t have any chickens
he never paid any attention to her

Daren’s girlfriend, Wanda, always got crazy
during full moons, as if connected to them.
but Daren didn’t care, not one bit.
he said, “At least she’s not a werewolf.”

I cannot even begin to count
all the people who have passed
through my life.
From passing strangers to friends,
enemies, coworkers and lovers.
From Woburn, Massachusetts to
many towns, cities and states.
From Germany, Paris, Rome, and
the Philippines too, so many
passing people.
Many no doubt are dead now and
many are still living,
but like me they’re all passing out
of this world, one by one, place
by place.
All of us just people passing through
this temporary world into the next.

Imagine if that became true, and what would AI do?
Imagine if AI turned out to be altruistic and ran the
world better than humans do.
Imagine a world without wars and crimes and for
once everything was running smoothly.
Or, as many believe, a world where humans
became obsolete and enslaved by an AI overlord.
Or, as some believe, imagine a world were humans
became extinct and AI lived on in their place.
Supposedly 99% of all the species that ever lived
are now extinct, and we could be one of them.
I choose to see AI as beneficial and a possible
tool in creating a far better world than this one.
I also see a lurking darkness where a nation with
evil intentions could use it to conquer the world.

A lonely sparrow croons a love song
seeking a female mate.
As female sparrows swoon, a hawk
hears the sparrow’s song as well.
Just as an enchanted female sparrow
flies toward the amorous male sparrow,
the ravenous hawk swoops in and rips
the sparrow’s song and his life away.
The carnage in this world can be
overwhelming sometimes.
And neither song birds nor humans
are ever entirely safe.
